Last month, we marked one year of the pandemic. For me, this means one year of teaching solely online (an estimated 1,000 Zoom lessons!).
In the beginning, it was an adjustment for all of us.
We learned the ins and outs of Zoom ("Is 'original sound' turned on?"), my students sent me their completed theory pages via text, and we held our first virtual recital.
We figured out how to position our devices next to our instruments, brought in lamps from other rooms for evening lessons, and uploaded recordings back and forth on Google Drive. I learned how to create and send digital assignment sheets (look for a blog post on that next week!) and purchased an entire set of my favorite sight-reading curriculum so I could have copies to reference at home.
We've come a long way.
Perhaps the most surprising thing to come from this year is how connected I feel to my students and their families. Of course, I miss our face-to-face interactions and I look forward to the day when we can make music together live in a shared space, but in this time of separation and isolation, we've found meaningful ways to stay connected.
I've met my students in their homes (virtually). I've heard their instruments and seen their practicing space. I've communicated more with my students and their families this past year than any year prior. They've shared their personal struggles, challenges, and achievements.
It's been a dark year in so many ways, but these moments of connection have been small rays of light.
In her book, Daring Greatly, Brené Brown writes, "Connection is why we're here. We are hardwired to connect with others, it's what gives purpose and meaning to our lives."
