Welcome to Music Education Basics

Music Education Basics is a free online workshop for music educators in all types of settings.

It’s available as a video series, but I’m going to share the audio version right here on the podcast so you can tune into the content here each day if that’s easier for you.

Each day, we’ll explore a different foundational aspect of music teaching and learning — a core mindset or process or sequence or approach that will apply to you and your work whether you’re teaching elementary or secondary students or even working with adults. Each lesson has a corresponding workbook and a brief challenge to encourage you to take action in some way.

  • On Day 1, we'll talk about the fundamental first step to music-learning that’s often overlooked in music-teaching.

  • On Day 2, we'll talk about what it means to develop language skills in music and the importance of building a musical vocabulary. I’ll share a few practical strategies and resources to get you started.

  • On Day 3, we'll make the case for musical expression: specifically, musical phrasing, dynamics, and movement and why it’s important to incorporate these musical elements into the teaching and learning process from the very beginning.

  • On Day 4, we'll talk about readiness for music-reading: music notation, symbols, and intervals; how to introduce these things in an intentional and musical way. Plus, I’ll share 4 simple steps for helping support the development of reading skills in those you teach, little by little.

  • And on Day 5, we'll talk about one of my favorite topics, musical creativity — what it means and what it looks like, and 5 strategies for cultivating creative musicianship in your students this year.

I created Music Education Basics to help you

  • get back to the core of music teaching and learning,

  • give you clarity in your teaching, and

  • give you a fresh dose of inspiration and practical teaching ideas you can use right away.

Let’s get started.
